How do you pronounce "Mochi"

oaf
Dec 10, 2007 (6 years 130 days ago)

I've always presumed it was pronounced like "Mocha", so "mokee" (with a short 'o', not the American "Mohka").

Someone on the phone today pronounced it "Motchee", and this got me wondering....

How do you say it?

Well, I've had no problems getting around in Japan the last two times I went there. I'm not exactly completely fluent - I still have some issues with different tenses of words and such... but the people there understand me, and I understand them quite well.

Oddly enough, I taught myself by watching anime at an early age. Probably started about sixteen years ago.

Then, when I started Visual Basic programming (back on VB 3.0, when it was a huge hit), one of the programmers I looked up to at the time was a fairly young (she was about 16 at the time) Japanese girl. She was pretty good. I got the opportunity to speak to her at one point. She knew only a little English, and I knew only a little Japanese, but we could understand eachother. Eventually, we ended up learning eachothers languages just through communicating back and forth.

Other than that, though, I've had no formal education.

Also, now bob's got me wanting some mochi ice cream. I think that since your company is named after it, you should start a developer competition to win a year's supply worth of mochi ice cream. Mmm... I'd be in heaven.

As my mother tongue is Spanish, for me it was "Mo-Chee" from the very beginning but as I'm living in London, England, sometimes I thought it was "Moe-Chee" or "Moe-ke" :D
and I'm originally from El Salvador, Latinamerica, but living in Britain for the last 5 years or so...

And yeah. I say Moch-ee.
I think that it suits americans better to say Mochi with a long O, cause it's like Yoshi (Brits) and Yo-shi(Long O, american).
Mmm?

Well that's my view.
