Please divide the regular feed up

I would really like to see the regular game feed split, into Okay and Crap, to separate out the decent games that are being lost.

Consider this game, CounterLimit. Not exactly an original game, but nicely executed with some added features. Perhaps not good enough to be featured, but still much better than the sea of cookie-cutter dress up and puzzle games that populate the regular feed. Games like this are being lost and not getting the audience they deserve.

This has been brought up so many time already. Mochi's standard answers are to just ignoring it or telling us it isn't there top priority at this time. Mochi really doesn't care about making it easier for people to find descent game. All they want you to do is us there feed and stop complaining.

I would LOVE this to. There is an idea floating around in mochi's feedback channel here, but I would be very happy if they just would take all the cookie cutter dressup and jigsaw games and put them in their own channel.

But it probably won't happen. Publishers and Developers have been asking for this for sometime and nothing has happened yet.

gio-m, I think altering the feed would benefit Mochi. I've seen more than one post saying that a publisher doesn't bother browsing the standard feed because of all the junk in it. Which means some/many decent games aren't getting the exposure they should, causing lower game plays and lower ad revenue.

@nmz502 Oddly, I'm familiar with that idea in the feedback channel :)

Ok guys, we hear you but it's not an easy thing to just flip a switch and say "crap games go here, now you good ones stay in this line."

The only editorialization we do is just for featured games. The game approver plays the game. Scores based on a scale of 1-5, 5 being awesome and one being crap. If a game goes above a certain threshold it's featured, otherwise it's in the main feed.

Where things can get buried.

So how do we fix this? We've talked about doing game ratings, opening up the voting to a wider audience ala Newgrounds. The problem with this is that other games some portals want (the dress up games, etc.) get buried. It's a balancing act where you have to keep everyone happy. Remember there are a lot of portals out there who rely on dress-up and jigsaw games too!

So now some good news:

I've been working on a double-ultra-secret project to make feeds suck less. It'll add better filtering controls for finding the games each publisher would like. The problem is I'm only one person and there's a lot to do to get it finished.

Maybe it's something I can get online here before the weekend and start getting some feedback on it. It's a bit rough around the edges but it'd be great to get some real feedback on it.

What do you think?

That reminds me, I believe I suggested before actually keeping the current existing everything feed, but adding two new ones for okay and crap. I'd forgotten that. That way, you still have one feed that has every game in it.

I'd certainly be interested in seeing what progress you've currently made.

Once again though, what's crap and what isn't? It's very subjective. A game you think is crap I might find hilarious and feel people need to play it.

I'll try to get my experiement online.

Watch this space.

I don't understand why you employ game reviewers who can't spot a spammy jigsaw and mark it as such. If they can't do this, fire them and give them an Indian burn.

Ah, now wm is getting a bit more specific! Our distribution guidelines are very loose, but still something we can change.

Citing some examples of games like this would go a long way for making a case to change them.

Not distribution, I'm just supporting what egdcltd suggested. It shouldn't be hard for anybody whose job it is to judge games to glance over the feed and spot turds like these:

alt text

And they are turds. Objectively. A small girl might enjoy playing one that they come across, but treating the games with the prejudice they deserve wouldn't prevent that from happening.

I'm certain we have portal owners who rely on us to provide those types of games for their small girl market.

We have to be everything for everyone, which is why I'm hoping adding better filtering options will help alleviate the pain for those who know what they want and would like to ignore everything else.

Those portals are dicks! Is it really worth catering to the bottom-feeders when it upsets people who do good work?

But okay, fair enough. As long as we know what the deal is so we don't need to keep waiting for it to change.

Portals who rely on those sort of games would still be able to get them. You can always filter by dressup games for one thing. It would just be nice having feeds that didn't have those games in for everyone who doesn't want them.

Yeah, just call it a "specialist" feed. That's much better than making the regular feed "specialist".

Well a simple solution would be a rating of 4 and above go into featured, above 2 is the 'okay' feed and if it's below 2 then it goes in to the crap.

That way the reviewers, who're really not going to be impressed by jigsaws as they must review hundreds per day, can mark the jigsaws etc as 1 which means they will (or at least should) be automatically filtered out as there is no way a cookie-cutter jigsaw game can get anything bar a 1.

Why not have an option to NOT view jigsaw and dress up games? Basically have a choice of viewing all games, or everything except jigsaw and dress up. Thats how some of the other distribution services do it.

That doesn't achieve the same thing. A crap game isn't the same thing as blatant spam.

It sure would make finding good games easier for people(including myself) who hand pick games from the feed, and don't want to have to look through 100 spammy games to find 1 good game.

It does if you use the right guidelines. A crap game can still get a 2 from a reviewer, I imagine most games only get a single review esp. crap / jigsaw games, making it into the 'okay' range and not stuck with the jigsaws and spam.

What I'm about to show you is sooooo freaking alpha that if I catch you using it for production services I'll make sure this will ruin your computer, your love life and pour sugar in your gas tank.

Don't expect pretty interfaces, this is raw, bare metal feeds querying. You send a query, out comes the JSON with the results of your query.

It's called feedmonger.

Some examples:

Say you want the feed without jigsaw or dress-up games:

http://i-ee3262aa.dyndev.mochimedia.com/feeds/query/?q=(not category:dress-up and not category:jigsaw)

The query is provided via the q= argument to the get request. Queries must be logically joined together with and and or and can be negated with not. Multiple queries can be joined with parenthesis.

Things you can query:

Word Queries, searched via: <query key:search term>

e.g. q=category:shooting and category:action

  • category
  • tag
  • language
  • rating

Numerical Queries, search via: <query key:(<|>|<=|>=|=)numerical value>

e.g. q=width:>=800

  • recommendation
  • metascore
  • width
  • height

Presence Queries, search via: <query key>

e.g. q=not recommended, q=coins_enabled and recommended

  • coins_enabled
  • leaderboard_enabled
  • recommended

I cannot stress enough that this is a sneak-peek. We want to know how you would use this. What you would like to see. My plans are to use this to drive the publisher games catalog and have some sort of query builder that you can use and save queries.

I will make no guarantee that this service will stay up past this weekend. I will say again that this is a work in progress and I wanted to show you what I've been working on.

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT USE THIS FOR ANYTHING PRODUCTION. MANY BOTHANS DIED TO BRING YOU THIS INFORMATION

A starting point would be to consider games that are announced on this forum. They tend to be of a higher quality, and are not usually dress-up or jigsaw games!

Like the person who posted all their dress-up games on the forum until they were banned.

It's better to pick games posted about by people other than the author.

wow this topic really blew up fast. I think the filtering idea is great. Right now there is sort of a filter but not really. As a few have suggested having a filter where you choose not to view certain categories is probably the best.

Something like

Action
Adventure
Dress Up
Jigsaw
*Puzzle
Racing
*Shooter

The * is to represent a check box so with Puzzle and Shooter checked you will only see puzzle and shooter games and nothing else. Have everything checked by default but give the option to change it.

Maybe even extend this into the age ratings as well. So the kiddie sites don't have to worry about adding a game by accident that contains sexy ladies or blood and guts.

I think this will benefit everyone. Developers will have a better chance of being noticed by the publishers that are looking for their type of game(s) and the publishers will have an easier time finding games thus making it faster for them to put the games up.

The end result would be the publishers get more traffic because they have more / better games thus making them more money and the Developers will have better exposure for their games thus getting more impressions making all of us more money.

More money is good thing right?
